ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada -- The Grenada Football Association plans to build on the foundation of a successful 12-month period by kicking off 2018 with a series of activities.

One of those initiatives is the introduction of the Pure Grenada Cup.

The inaugural competition -- scheduled to be contested from March 17-May 5, 2018 -- will feature 200 of the country’s best players and involve the island’s six parishes, sister isles Carriacou and Petite Martinique, as well as the under-20 national team.

“There is a big buzz about this tournament throughout Grenada and we are all excited about plans as they unfold since it will capture the interest of the entire Island” said Chairman of the Pure Grenada Cup, Alvin Clouden, who also was the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee as Grenada hosted its first ever CONCACAF event -- the 2015 CONCACAF Under-17 Women’s Championship.

Clouden also added that one of the benefits realized from the U-17 tournament was the empowerment of human resources, enhancing Grenada’s ability to stage large sporting events.

Additionally, the Pure Grenada Cup is intended to boost the sporting aspirations of the Spice Islands’ footballers

“We are hoping to invite some scouts to the tournament with a view of having them take a look at our players,” said GFA President Cheney Joseph.

The eight teams participating in the tournament are: St. Patrick (Crown City Strikers), St. Mark (Western Stars), St. John (Dolphins), St. George (Royal Canons), Carriacou and Petite Martinique (Maroons), St. Andrew (Big Parish Stars), St. David (Top Strikers) and the Grenada under-20 national team (Young Gunners).
