Cibao comeback at Port of Spain to advance for Caribbean Cup semifinals

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago – Cibao FC won 3-2 at AC Port of Spain in Group B of the 2024 Concacaf Caribbean Cup at Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

Shackiel Smek Henry placed the home side in the lead in the 38' with a header in the penalty area, connecting on a cross from the left flank by Jameel Neptune. Henry increased his tally to three goals to finish as Port of Spain’s top scorer.

Jameel Neptune extended the lead for the hosts in the 40' with a scissor kick inside the penalty area.

Herold Charles came off the bench in the 53’ to change the game with three assists to spur the Cibao comeback.

Jean López cut the deficit for the visitors in the 63' with a header to connect with a corner kick service from Charles.

Rivaldo Correa struck a header of his own in the 75' on another corner for the Dominican Republic side, tying the match.

Correa struck the match-winning goal in the 89’, connecting inside the penalty area on a through ball from Charles.

As a result, Cibao FC secured the second berth to the semifinals by clinching a top two spot in the group. AC Port of Spain bows out of the tournament after concluding its group stage participation. 

Cibao FC will play its final group stage encounter by hosting Ouanaminthe next Tuesday. First place in the group will be at stake for Cibao.
