Cibao, Moca split points in Caribbean Cup

SANTIAGO DE LOS CABALLEROS, Dominican Republic – Cibao FC and Moca FC played to a scoreless draw in the 2024 Concacaf Caribbean Cup on Wednesday at Estadio Cibao FC in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic. 

The two Dominican sides met for the first time in the Caribbean Cup, bringing their rivalry to the regional competition. Neither side would break through with a goal as both take a point to start their campaigns in Group B.

Luis Quezada had the first look on target in the 3’ as the home side threatened from a free kick.

Jean López attempted from midfield in the 38’, but Cibao goalkeeper Miguel Lloyd averted the danger.

Carlos Rossell struck from outside the box in the 41’ in an attempt to take the lead but the visitors were denied again by Lloyd.

Gustavo Ascona struck a power shot from distance in the 52’ as Lloyd continued to withstand the opposition.

Ascona struck a header at the right post in the 74’, but Lloyd was there with the timely dive to push the ball away.

Rivaldo Correa struck a header of his own inside the penalty box in the 77’, but the attempt hit the outside of the crossbar.

Quezada had a shot from outside the box in the 79’ but was denied by the Moca goalkeeper Miguel Báez.

Both defenses started the tournament with a clean sheet. Miguel Lloyd ended the match with three saves, while Miguel Báez collected four of his own.

Moca FC will retake the field on Tuesday as it welcomes AC Port of Spain to the Estadio Moca 85 in Moca, Dominican Republic. Cibao FC will meet Grenades FC on Wednesday at the Estadio Cibao FC in Santiago de los Caballeros.
