Port of Spain, Golden Lion square off with first win on mind

MIAMI, Florida – The 2023 Concacaf Caribbean Club continues on Wednesday, beginning with an important contest in Group A between Martinique’s Golden Lion and Port of Spain of Trinidad and Tobago at Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

Thus far neither side has been able to earn a point, so a victory in this encounter would go a long way toward kick-starting their group stage campaign.

Golden Lion, who were runners-up of the 2023 Concacaf Caribbean Club Shield, fell 1-0 at home in their lone match to Defence Force, while Port of Spain suffered back-to-back defeats by a one goal margin: 1-0 at Moca and 2-1 at Cavalier.

Duane Muckette has the lone Port of Spain goal in the tournament, thanks in part to the playmaking efforts of John Paul Rochford, who assisted on the goal and leads the team in passes (146) and ball recoveries (4).

Tyrone Charles has also been an active player going forward for Port of Spain, with six shots taken.

Golden Lion will attempt to recover the goal-scoring form they showed in the Shield when they tallied 18 goals. In moments like these, it’s a luxury to have a seasoned player who played on a big stage and Golden Lion have that in FW Kevin Parsemain, who is the Martinique National Team’s all-time top scorer and scored in three different Concacaf Gold Cups.

Parsemain cannot do it all alone, though, so the likes of Norman Grelet and Romario Barthelery will need to step up. Grelet led the team in passes against Defence Force with 46, while Barthelery made two tackles and completed 89 percent of his passes.
