ALAJUELA, Costa Rica – LD Alajuelense drew 1-1 with Comunicaciones FC in the second leg of their quarterfinal series in the 2024 Concacaf Central American Cup on Thursday at Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela, Costa Rica.
Antonio López had a chance for the visitors from a free kick opportunity in the 17’, but his shot to the top-right corner was denied by Alajuelense goalkeeper Leonel Moreira.
A long-range right-footed drive from attempt Stheven Robles in the 21’ hit the woodwork and came close to giving Comunicaciones the lead.
Anderson Cardoso converted from the spot in the 37’ to open the scoring and place Alajuelense in front.
Diego Casas equalized for Comunicaciones in the 43’ through a diving header inside the penalty box, capitalizing on a cross from Azarías Londoño from the left side of the pitch.
Diego Campos attempted to restore the lead for the hosts in the 71’, but his attempt from outside the box was saved by Comunicaciones goalkeeper Fredy Pérez.
LD Alajuelense won the series with an aggregate score of 3-2 following its 2-1 away win in the first leg. The Costa Rica club returns to the semifinals of the tournament in its continuing title defense and qualified for the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup.
Comunicaciones FC exits title contention but may still qualify for next year’s Champions Cup by winning in the play-in round.
