Alajuelense wins fourth straight to remain unbeaten in Central American Cup

ALAJUELA, Costa Rica – LD Alajuelense won 2-1 against Comunicaciones FC in the 2024 Concacaf Central American Cup on Tuesday at the Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela, Costa Rica. 

With the victory, Alajuela concluded the group stage with a perfect 4-0-0 record in Group A. Comunicaciones FC finished in second place with a 2-1-1 mark. 

Anderson Cardoso placed the hosts in front in the 2’, but Comunicaciones goalkeeper Fredy Pérez denied his attempt inside the box.

Pérez once again prevented Alajuelense in the 7’ by stopping a powerful strike from Diego Campos from a free kick. 

Diego Casas had a promising opportunity for Comunicaciones in the 16’, following a low cross into the box from Azarías Londoño, but his attempt was just wide of the far post. 

Casas opened the scoring in the 59’, converting from the penalty spot to place the Guatemalan side ahead. 

Alajuelense found the equalizer in the 63’, forcing an own goal from Alejandro Prieto following a corner kick.

The hosts once again capitalized on a corner kick opportunity in the 86’, as Santiago Van Der Putten finished with a header to give Alajuelense the full three points.

Champions of the 2023 edition, Alajuelense will continue its title defense in the quarterfinals. The team has an undefeated record overall in the tournament, with 11 wins and three draws. 

Comunicaciones will also continue its campaign in the 2024 edition with its qualification to the quarterfinals as one of the top two teams in the group.
