Antigua, Saprissa draw in quarterfinals first leg in Central American Cup

ANTIGUA, Guatemala – Antigua GFC drew nil-nil with Deportivo Saprissa in the first leg of their quarterfinal’s series in the 2024 Concacaf Central American Cup on Tuesday at Estadio Pensativo in Antigua, Guatemala.

Both goalkeepers had notable appearances between the sticks to record clean sheets for their teams. Antigua’s Luis Morán ended the match with five saves, while Saprissa man Esteban Alvarado recorded three saves. 

Ariel Rodríguez had an early chance for the visitors in the 1’, but his right-footed attempt from the edge of the box was stopped by Morán.

José Espinoza hit the woodwork in the 13’ and nearly gave Antigua the lead.

Morán denied a penalty from Saprissa’s Rodríguez in the 27’.

In the second half, Antigua went a man down in the 51’ when Dennis Ramirez was shown a red card.

Alvarado denied two opportunities in quick succession from Antigua in 64’ to keep the match scoreless.

Saprissa had another chance to take the lead through a penalty in the 76’, but Oscar Duarte’s attempt hit the right post.

Saprissa and Antigua will meet in the second leg next Tuesday at Estadio Saprissa in San Juan de Tibás, Costa Rica. The winner will advance to the semifinals and earn a berth in the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup.
