MIAMI, Florida – Group A of the 2023 Concacaf Central American Cup resumed on Tuesday with a 0-0 draw between Guatemalan side Coban Imperial and Universitario of Panama at the Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
Coban Imperial remain unbeaten in the group with four points after two matches, while Universitario have one point after one game.
The first big scoring chance of the match arrived in the 28’ on a screaming shot taken by Yeltsin Alvarez that required Universitario GK Joseph Esquina to react quickly to tip the ball over the crossbar.
The pressure was mostly being mounted by Coban Imperial, but Universitario did muster a good look at goal in the 30’ on a header from close-range that forced Coban Imperial GK Minor Alvarez into a save.
The chances were now starting to come thick and fast and Coban Imperial’s Luis Martinez could not believe his misfortune when his thumping header bounced wide in the 36’.
As play drifted into the second half, the scoring chances for Coban Imperial continued to add up, but the final product was still lacking.
Universitario wanted to make Coban Imperial pay for their misses and Angel Caicedo’s dipping shot from distance in the 63’ was a big warning sign, as it came off the crossbar.
But it was all Coban Imperial in the final quarter-hour and the winner looked like it was on its way in the 85’ through Martinez, only to see the ball smack the post.
In the end, each team came away with a point, as the group remains wide open.
