MIAMI, Florida – Group C of the 2023 Concacaf Central American Cup will be decided on Wednesday, as Comunicaciones of Guatemala take on Costa Rican club Herediano at the Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
The Cremas head into their home encounter atop the group with a perfect nine points from three games, while having outscored opponents 8-2. Herediano are just two points back, though, and a win for the visiting Ticos would be enough to usurp a first-place finish in the group.
Comunicaciones have gotten so many top performances throughout the tournament, especially from Antonio Lopez, Jose Corena and Jorge Aparicio. Lopez has two goals and a whopping four assists in the tournament, while Corena tallied twice in last week’s win versus Aguila. Aparicio also found the back of the net in that affair and leads the team in passes with 138.
Herediano have been very solid in their three matches to date and really found their scoring stride two weeks ago in the 3-2 victory against Real Espana in which Alejandro Bran bagged a brace. Haxzel Quiros has also provided help with assists in the last two games, while Ronaldo Araya has a goal and an assist.
This will be the fifth meeting between these two Central American powers, the last coming in the 2011-12 Concacaf Champions Cup group stage when Herediano pocketed a 4-1 win after Comunicaciones had won earlier in the group stage, 2-0.
The night in Group C will kick off with Real Espana of Honduras meeting El Salvador’s Aguila at the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.
It will serve as a great opportunity to end the tournament on a high note for both teams. Aguila would love to earn their second victory, while Real Espana will be on the hunt for their first win.
Daniel Carter has been one of the standout performers for Real Espana with two goals and an assist, while Franklin Flores leads the team in passes with 150, one of those ending with an assist.
Veteran MF Darwin Ceren has starred for Aguila, scoring the winning goal against Diriangen, while last week Melvin Cartagena was a workhorse with 87 completed passes and four ball recoveries against Comunicaciones.
This will be their third meeting all-time, with the previous two coming back in the 1992 Concacaf Champions Cup, which ended 3-1 on aggregate in favor of Real Espana.
