Herediano advances to semifinals of 2024 Central American Cup

CARTAGO, Costa Rica – CS Herediano and FC Motagua drew nil-nil in the second leg of their quarterfinal series in the 2024 Concacaf Central American Cup on Wednesday at Estadio José Rafael Fello Meza in Cartago, Costa Rica.

Carlos Mejía had a promising look to give Motagua the lead in the 37’, but Herediano goalkeeper Anthony Walker saved his attempt from outside the box.

In the second half, Mejía attempted to score the opener for the visitors with a long-range attempt in the 54’ but was denied once again by Walker.¡

Motagua goalkeeper Marlon Licona stopped an opportunity from Herediano’s Marcel Hernández in the 71’, keeping the match scoreless.

Ariel Arauz attempted to gain the lead for Herediano with an individual play in the 85’, but his finish went above the crossbar.

CS Herediano won the series with an aggregate score of 2-2, advancing on away goals. The Costa Rica side returns to the tournament’s semifinals for a second consecutive year. Herediano also qualified for the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup.

FC Motagua exits the title contention but may still qualify for next year’s Champions Cup through one of the two spots at stake in the play-in round.
