Herediano tops Tauro on Ruíz goal in Central American Cup

SAN JOSÉ, Costa Rica – CS Herediano won 1-nil against Tauro FC as the first matchday in the 2024 Concacaf Central American Cup concluded Tuesday night at the National Stadium in San José, Costa Rica.

Ronaldo Araya struck a bending ball in the 6’ to test Panamanian goalkeeper Alex Rodriguez early.

Elías Aguilar struck from distance in the 8’, but Rodriguez was there to add another save as he continued his tally, which ended at eight at the end of the night.

Araya had a prime opportunity inside the box in the 34’, but Rodriguez got a foot on it to avert the danger.

Marcel Hernández struck from the top of the box as Rodriguez again denied Costa Ricans.

John Jairo Ruíz struck the lone goal of the encounter in the 52' with a lethal strike from outside the box.

Edson Samms stuck a header on goal in the 76’ for the best chance for the Panamanians on the night.

Cristian Quintero attempted for the visitors in the 83’, striking from a distance just wide of the left post, but the score would remain through the full-time whistle.

Herediano collected its first three points to climb to second in Group A. Cacique Diriangén defeated FC Motagua earlier in the night and finished the night first based on goals scored.

The next match for Herediano will come on Wednesday, August 7 in a trip to Diriangén for a battle of first place teams. Tauro will travel to Motagua on Tuesday, August 13 for its next encounter.
