Motagua, Herediano even in quarterfinals first leg in Central American Cup

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras – FC Motagua and CS Herediano drew 2-2 in the first leg of their quarterfinal’s series in the 2024 Concacaf Central American Cup on Wednesday at Estadio Nacional Chelato Uclés in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

The hosts opened the scoring in the 3’, with Rodrigo Gómez taking advantage of a loose ball on the edge of the box to give Motagua the lead. 

Herediano leveled the scoring at the start of the second half through an individual play from José González in the 47’, following an assist from Marcel Hernández

Motagua reclaimed the lead with a header from Rodrigo Auzmendi inside the penalty area in the 79’, connecting with a cross from Jorge Serrano

The hosts went down a man in the 88’ when Walter Martínez was shown a red card.

Herediano equalized with a header from Everardo Rubio inside the box in the 90’+7 following a set-piece delivery from Ronaldo Araya.

FC Motagua extended its all-time unbeaten home record in the CCAC to five wins and two draws. Herediano remains unbeaten in its two editions with seven wins and six draws. 

Motagua and Herediano will meet in the second leg next Wednesday in Costa Rica. The winner on aggregate will advance to the semifinals and earn a berth in the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup.
