Olimpia defeats Independiente to close first match week in Central American Cup

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras – CD Olimpia earned a 3-nil victory against Club Atlético Independiente in the 2024 Concacaf Central American Cup on Thursday night at the Chelato Uclés National Stadium in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

Anthony Stewart struck on target in the 1’ as the visitors looked to get on the scoresheet first.

Michaell Chirinos opened the scoring in the 30' with a slight touch from his right foot to redirect a pass over the top from Edwin Rodríguez.

Héctor Hurtado struck from outside the box in the 68’ as Independiente worked for the equalizer.

Yustin Arboleda headed a ball towards goal in the 69’ but was denied by the crossbar.

Ignacio Colombini struck with a right-footed finish in the 78' to extend Olimpia’s lead. Chirinos provided the assist with a slight pause on the outside edge of the box before passing it off to the Argentine forward.

Davis Contreras had one last look for the visitors in the 90’ but the shot was off target.

José Pinto struck in the 90'+3 to sneak one more goal in before the full-time whistle.

The result gives Olimpia its first three points to keep pace with Antigua GFC for the Group C lead. The Honduran side will travel to Port Layola on Thursday, August 8 while CAI travels to Antigua on Tuesday, August 13.
