SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador – CD Águila and Real Estelí FC drew nil-nil in the second leg of their quarterfinal series in the 2024 Concacaf Central American Cup on Wednesday at the Estadio Cuscatlán in San Salvador, El Salvador.
Blas Sosa had a promising opportunity for the hosts in the 11’ following a low cross from the right wing by Melvin Cartagena, but Sosa’s shot went above the crossbar.
A right-footed drive from outside the box by Harold Medina nearly placed Real Estelí up in the 19’, but Antigua goalkeeper Rafael García saved the attempt.
Medina came close to breaking the deadlock in the second half with a powerful long-range shot in the 69’ that bounced off the woodwork.
García denied an attempt from Bancy Hernandez in the 75’, fending off the Estelí man on a one-on-one opportunity.
Real Estelí won the quarterfinals series with an aggregate score of 2-1 following its win on home soil in the first leg and returns to the tournament semifinals for a second consecutive year. The Nicaraguan side also qualified for the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup.
Águila exits the title contention but may still secure a berth in next year’s Champions Cup through one of the two spots at stake in the play-in round.
