PANAMA – The third week of matches in the 2023 Concacaf Central American Cup kicked off on Tuesday with an exciting 4-1 victory for Panamanian side Universitario against Jocoro of El Salvador in Group A at the Estadio Universitario in Penonome, Panama.
It was an open start from the two teams and Universitario GK Joseph Esquina and Jocoro shot-stopper Danilo Joya were each called into action in the opening 10 minutes.
Universitario almost had the game’s first goal midway through the first half when Joya misjudged a shot and Juan Arce was there on the doorstep to put it in, but Joya made a save to deny the goal.
Jocoro would get the game’s first goal in the 53’ on a header from German Aguila, who nodded in a header off a cross from Elmer Guity, making it 1-0 to the visitors.
Universitario’s response did not come until the 72’, but once it did, it was an avalanche of goals.
Everardo Rose scored the first of his two goals on a powerful right-footed shot from outside the area to even the score at 1-1.
Less than two minutes later Jorge Clement was left unmarked in the Jocoro area and was able to steer home a header off a free kick to suddenly give Universitario a 2-1 lead.
Universitario kept their foot on the gas and tacked on an insurance goal in the 88’ after Erick Rodriguez combined with Rose in the area and Rodriguez polished it off with a right-footed finish.
Rose then tallied his second of the night in second half stoppage time by weaving through the Jocoro defense and launching a left-footed shot into the top left corner of net to complete the 4-1 scoreline.
