TEGUCIGALPA – Panamanian side Sporting San Miguelito wrapped up their 2023 Concacaf Central American Cup campaign in Group D on a high note with a 2-0 win at Olancho of Honduras on Thursday night at the Estadio Nacional Chelato Ucles in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
Sporting San Miguelito finish the group stage in third place with six points, while Olancho ended in the fourth position in the group with three points.
The visitors leaped ahead 1-0 in the 15’ through the goalscoring exploits of veteran striker Gabriel Torres. The Panamanian National Team legend was the beneficiary of an inch-perfect cross from Leslie Heraldez, allowing Torres to finish with ease into net from just a few yards away.
The Olancho attack started to come to life toward the end of the first half and it had two great cracks at goal in the 35’ and the 37’. First it was a Mario Martinez shot from distance that required a save from Sporting San Miguelito GK Jorginho Frias, followed by Jose Pablo Soda spraying as hot wide after an excellent pass from Martinez.
Torres was presented with another chance at a goal shortly before halftime, as he was left alone in front of goal, but sent his shot over the crossbar.
Sporting San Miguelito were keen to add to their lead and moments after missing wide with an effort, Alexis Corpas would light up the scoreboard with a right-footed rocket to double the advantage to 2-0 in the 62’.
From there, the Sporting San Miguelito defense took over to pocket their second win of the tournament.
