LEONORA, Guyana -- Alpha United captured the Guyana Stag Elite League Finale title, overcoming Genesis champion Slingerz FC on penalty kicks, 3-0, after their final ended in a 0-0 draw in the early hours of Monday at the National Track and Field Facility.
Goalkeeper Richie Richards saved all three of Slingerz’s attempts, including one by captain Tichard Joseph, who missed a penalty kick in regulation time. The Hammer was flawless from the spot as captain Dwight Peters, Andrew Murray and Delon Lanferman converted.
The encounter started at a hectic pace with both sides taking the fight to each other. It was Alpha, however, which would produce the first scoring opportunity, but Daniel Wilson fired wide of the target.
An accurate touch in the final third of the field was hard to come by through the remainder of the evening.
Alpha United and Slingerz, champions of the two seasons, will meet again to determine the league’s outright champion. A date has not yet been announced for the game.
Both will be Guyana’s representatives in the 2017 the CFU Club Championship.
