MIAMI – Club America has sights on moving to the next round as it hosts New England Revolution in the second leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinals on Tuesday at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
America won the first leg, 4-0, in Foxborough, Massachusetts with goals from Henry Martin, Alejandro Zendejas, Cristian Calderon, and Brian Rodriguez.
The result marked a 20th away victory for Club America in CCC. The seven-time CCC winners are tied with Monterrey in second place of Mexican clubs with the most away wins in tournament history, only behind Cruz Azul with 24.
Las Aguilas will seek to maintain a perfect success rate in the Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinals, where they have advanced in all seven participations. Club America has only lost one of its last 13 quarterfinal matches.
Henry Martin scored his seventh Champions Cup goal to tie Hugo Sanchez for fourth place among Mexican scorers who have worn the America jersey in CCC play.
Alejandro Zendejas leads the team with three goals in this CCC campaign. Cristian Calderon scored his first goal with America and etched the club’s 100th goal in the tournament since the format change in 2008-09.
No MLS side has advanced to the next round after conceding four goals in the first leg, a feat New England hopes to accomplish. The Revs also aspire to advance to their first CCC semifinals.
The Revolution bounced back from last week’s defeat with a 1-0 win over Charlotte FC in MLS play. Carlos Gil scored the goal and will be one of the players to watch along with Tomas Chancalay, who leads the Revs with four CCC goals.
