MEXICO CITY – After opening in Buenos Aires, the FIFA Club World Cup Welcome Tour continued this past weekend with a visit to Mexico City, home of Cruz Azul, CONCACAF’s representative in this year’s competition.
Patio Universidad Shopping Mall was the site for the two-day celebration, featuring the sought-after trophy that will be presented to the champion after the final. The tour is traveling to the home cities of all seven of the Club World Cup’s participants.
Cruz Azul goalkeeper Yosgart Gutierrez interacted with fans as part of the promotional event and is looking forward to the competitive challenges ahead.
"It will be very important to put the name of Mexico in a high place and face up against the best teams in the world,” said Cruz Azul goalkeeper Yosgart Gutierrez. “There are strong words speaking of this tournament. It's a world class event. Any player in the world would have the hope of contesting even just a few minutes in a competition like this.”
The 11th edition of the Club World Cup will be played December 10-20 in Morocco.
The six-time CONCACAF club champion will open its campaign against the winner of the AFC Champions League final between Australia’s Western Sydney Wanderers and Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia on December 13 at Rabat’s Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium. The winner will then play UEFA Champions League holder Real Madrid (ESP) in the semifinals.
