MIAMI, Florida – A busy seven-match slate was on the docket on Wednesday night in the 2023 Leagues Cup, with several times finding their scoring stride and posting big wins.
The New England Revolution ran out 5-1 winners against Atletico San Luis at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts in East Group 4 thanks in large part to a hat trick from Giacomo Vrioni. The win secures a place in the Round of 32 for the Revolution.
The Philadelphia Union also enjoyed a five-goal haul on the evening, defeating Queretaro 5-1 at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania in East Group 1. Daniel Gazdag had a hat trick himself to help the Union clinch a first-place finish in the group.
New York City FC also tallied a handful of goals against fellow MLS side Toronto FC in a 5-0 final at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey in East Group 3. Santiago Rodriguez led the way for NYCFC with a brace. NYCFC have also clinched a berth in the Round of 32.
In another all-MLS match-up, DC United emerged with a 1-0 victory against CF Montreal at Montreal’s Saputo Stadium in East Group 2. Erik Hurtado’s second half goal made the difference, permitting 1998 Concacaf Champions Cup winners DC United to secure a knockout stage spot.
All three groups in the West were in action, beginning in West Group 1 where 2020 Concacaf Champions Cup winners Tigres rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to top the Portland Timbers 2-1 at Providence Park in Portland, Oregon. Jesus Angulo’s 80th minute goal gave the Liga MX the three points.
In a rematch of the 2010-11 Concacaf Champions Cup Final, Monterrey defeated Real Salt Lake 3-0 in West Group 2 at America First Field in Sandy, Utah. German Berterame’s two goals helped power Rayados to victory.
Rounding out the night was West Group 3 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California where Club Leon downed the Los Angeles Galaxy 1-0 on a second half goal from Angel Mena. The 2023 Champions Cup winners secured first-place in the group with the win.
Four more matches are in store on Thursday, as 2018 Concacaf champions Chivas take on FC Cincinnati at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio in Central Group 3. It will be the first match for Chivas in the tournament, while FC Cincinnati have two points after their penalty shootout win over Sporting Kansas City.
Minnesota United and the Chicago Fire will feature in an all-MLS affair at Allianz Field in Saint Paul, Minnesota in Central Group 2. Minnesota United were 4-0 winners in their opener against Puebla.
Nashville SC will face Mexican opposition for the first time when they take on Toluca at GEODIS Park in Nashville, Tennessee in Central Group 4. Nashville sit on three points after opening with a 2-1 victory over the Colorado Rapids. Toluca are looking to return to Concacaf competition for the first time since 2019.
The night is then rounded out by seven-time Concacaf champions Club America making their Leagues Cup debut against Saint Louis City SC at City Park in St. Louis, Missouri in Central Group 1. Saint Louis City SC will be looking to rebound from their opening loss to the Columbus Crew.
