PACHUCA, Mexico – CF Pachuca edged CS Herediano, 2-1, in the second leg of their 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup Quarterfinals bout on Wednesday night at Estadio Hidalgo in Pachuca, Hidalgo, Mexico.
Pachuca won the first leg, 5-0, and withstood the Costa Rican side to advance 7-1 on aggregate.
Orlando Galo had a right footed hit from the edge of the penalty arc in the 33’ but was denied by Pachuca goalkeeper Carlos Moreno.
Elias Aguilar got a hit under the wall on a 45’+1 free kick but Moreno was alert for the save to keep the score level into halftime.
Bryan Gonzalez gave Pachuca the lead in the 47’ on a header at the near post to convert off a corner kick. Eduardo Lopez provided the assist after coming off the bench to start the second half.
Salomon Rondon extended the lead in the 59’ with a right footed shot on a through ball from Lopez, who collected his second assist of the night. Rondon extended his lead as the top scorer with his seventh goal of the campaign.
Everardo Rubio converted from the penalty spot in the 63’ to put the visitors on the board. It marks the first Champions Cup goal for the Herediano center back.
Gonzalez nearly doubled his tally in the 84’ with a loose header inside the box following a corner but Miguel Basulto cleared the ball from crossing the goal line.
Pachuca advances to the semifinals for the first time since the 2016–17 edition, when it finished as champion. The Tuzos will face fellow Liga MX side Club America in the next round at the end of April.
