PORTLAND, Oregon – The Portland Timbers announced Monday the signing of veteran English Premier League central defender Steven Taylor.

Taylor spent 12 years with Newcastle United, making 268 appearances and scoring 15 goals. His first team debut came against Spain’s Mallorca in a UEFA Cup encounter in 2004.  The 30-year-old helped the Magpies win the Championship and promotion back to the Premier League in 2010.

“Taylor is a player with a wealth of experience in the English Premier League and will be a good fit in our club,” said Gavin Wilkinson, general manager and president of soccer for the Timbers.  “This addition addresses a positional need at a critical stage of the season.”

Portland will open its second-ever Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League campaign on August 3 against visiting 2016 Salvadoran Clausura champion Dragon.
