MIAMI, Florida – The three Liga MX teams remaining in the 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League were in action over the weekend, with Cruz Azul winning and stretching their lead atop the Liga MX table to five points over second-place Club America.
Ahead of their 2021 quarterfinal first leg against Toronto FC on Tuesday, Cruz Azul poured in another three goals in a 3-2 victory over Atletico San Luis.
Elias Hernandez got things started in just the 2’ when a punt from GK Sebastian Jurado bounced over everyone’s head and Hernandez was there to swoop in and score for a 1-0 lead.
A handball from Atletico San Luis in their own area led to Cruz Azul’s second of the day in the 22’, with Jonathan Rodriguez calmly converting the penalty to make it a 2-0 affair.
Nicolas Ibanez pulled a goal back, 2-1, in the 32’ through the penalty spot, but Cruz Azul would restore their two-goal advantage in the 74’ thanks to Pablo Cesar Aguilar’s right-footed finish off a pass from Roberto Alvarado.
However, an own goal three minutes later from Julio Cesar Dominguez cut the Cruz Azul lead to 3-2, but La Maquina’s defense were able to close things down to secure the win.
Club America will return to the SCCL with a quarterfinal date against the Portland Timbers after a 3-1 defeat at Toluca over the weekend.
It was a tough start for Las Aquilas, who found themselves down 2-0 after 11 minutes on goals from Michael Estrada and Raul Lopez, but an Emanuel Aguilera penalty conversion in the 51’ made it a 2-1 contest with plenty of time to play.
Club America pushed for an equalizer, but in the end Alexis Canelo’s goal in the 73’ sealed the win for Toluca.
Rounding out the action in Liga MX among SCCL teams was Monterrey, who will square off in midweek with Columbus Crew SC.
The Rayados faced city rivals and 2020 SCCL champions Tigres UANL in a thrilling affair that ended in a 2-1 defeat for Monterrey.
Arturo Gonzalez put Monterrey into the lead, 1-0, in the 18’ with a sizzling left-footed strike from distance, only to see Tigres respond through a Carlos Gonzalez goal in the 35’ and Andre-Pierre Gignac’s penalty conversion in the 64’.
