MIAMI, Florida – The four semifinalists in the 2022 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League all returned to domestic action over the weekend after their successful midweek series triumphs, including the Seattle Sounders, who earned a point in a 1-1 draw away to Austin FC.
Fresh off their impressive 1-1 draw in Leon against Club Leon that earned them a 4-1 win on aggregate, the Sounders extended their unbeaten run in MLS play to two games with Sunday’s result in Austin.
Cristian Roldan continued his impressive form with an assist on Will Bruin’s opening goal in the 43’. The Seattle midfielder beat the offside trap before sliding a cross from the right wing into Bruin, who nudged it home for a 1-0 Seattle lead.
The Sounders’ defense kept the Austin FC attack at bay until the 70’ when Diego Fagundez took advantage of a loose ball deep in the Seattle area and fired in to complete the 1-1 scoreline.
After eliminating Comunicaciones of Guatemala 5-5 on the away goal tiebreaker last Tuesday in Guatemala, New York City FC returned to MLS action, but had a frustrating outing in a 2-0 home loss with the Philadelphia Union.
Alejandro Bedoya opened the scoring, 1-0, in the 12’ before Daniel Gazdag doubled the lead to 2-0 in the 33’ for Philadelphia. NYCFC looked to respond in the second half, but could not find a way past Union GK and 2017 Concacaf Gold Cup Golden Glove winner Andre Blake.
Pumas looked to continue the momentum from their dramatic comeback series win against the New England Revolution, but were unable to find a way past Necaxa in a 3-1 win for the visitors.
Alan Medina handed Nexaca a 1-0 lead in the 20’ on a left-footed finish from a tough angle. Five minutes later a foul in the Pumas area resulted in a penalty for Nexaca, which Rodrigo Aguirre confidently converted to make it 2-0 in the 28’.
Aguirre then got his second goal of the day on a free header in the 61’, extending the Necaxa lead to 3-0. In the end, though, Pumas would avoid the clean sheet defeat and pull a goal back in the 68’, as Diogo thumped in a header to get the SCCL semifinalists on the scoreboard, 3-1.
Cruz Azul made the long trip back from Montreal where they eliminated CF Montreal 2-1 on aggregate and squared off with Pachuca in Hidalgo on Saturday in a match that went the way of the Tuzos, 1-0.
Erick Sanchez’s right-footed finish in the 18’ proved to be the winning strike, as Cruz Azul were unable to take advantage of scoring chances in the second half, resulting in the narrow defeat.
