Caledonia AIA signs Guyana international

BOGOTA, Colombia -- Trinidad & Tobago’s Caledonia AIA announced Wednesday the signing of Guyana international Jamaal Smith as it strengthens its roster for upcoming domestic and CONCACAF Champions League campaigns.

Technical Director Jamaal Shabazz previously coached the defender when he was in charge of the Guyana national team from 2011 to 2012.

“He brings sound tactical awareness and discipline to our defence having played in Europe (Syrianska FC/Sweden) and so far we are all impressed at how well he has blended with the team,” Shabazz noted.

Smith said that he’s happy to be part of Caledonia and to link up once again with Shabazz.

“I feel at home already, the players are very welcoming and they (Caledonia) are a very professional side,” he commented.  “I must say that most of all, I’m elated to be coached by Mr. Shabazz again, having learn so much from him while with the Guyana National Team, so I’m ready to just put that shirt on and play.”

In his first outing for the club during a friendly on Sunday, Smith scored on a header in a 3-0 victory over Colombia’s Chia Sabana Norte.

The 25-year-old was born in Canada and appeared in four World Cup qualifiers for Brazil 2014.
