DOHA, Qatar – CF Pachuca triumphed 3-nil against Botafogo to win the FIFA Derby of the Americas as part of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup on Wednesday at Stadium 974 in Doha, Qatar.
The reigning Concacaf Champions Cup winners proved to be the more effective side in attack over ninety minutes against the recently crowned Copa Libertadores champions from CONMEBOL. The Tuzos had six shots on goal, against two from the Brazilian side, and struck three attempts inside the penalty area.
The Mexican side took the initiative from the opening moments, as Elías Montiel nearly placed Pachuca in the lead in the 7’ with a shot from outside the box, but the ball was just wide outside the left post.
Salomon Rondon followed the early attack with an effort on goal in the 8’, but it was right to the hands of Botafogo goalkeeper John.
Oussama Idrissi placed Pachuca in the lead in the 50’ after a spectacular display of dribbling in the box to open the scoring.
Carlos Moreno pulled off a timely stop in the 54’ to put two hands up against a potent strike from Cuiabano.
Nelson Deossa doubled the lead for Pachuca in the 66’ with a right-footed strike from the left side of the box, delivering a precise ground shot that went under the goalkeeper’s body.
Luis Rodriguez provided a timely denial in the 74’ to pull the ball away from his goal.
Moreno made another key stop in the 76’ to keep away a potent long-range strike from Jefferson Savarino.
Rondon sealed the third for Pachuca in the 80’ with a strike inside the box, assisted by Idrissi after a switch of play from Deossa.
The victory sees Pachuca advance to meet Egyptian side Al Ahly, the winner of the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup, for the FIFA Challenger Cup on Saturday at Stadium 974 in Doha, Qatar.
