MIAMI, Florida – Chivas will be seeking a quick start to spark a comeback bid in the second leg of their 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16 series with Club America on Wednesday night at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
The Guadalajara-based club fell 3-0 at home to their long-time domestic rivals in last week’s first leg at home, so no doubt they would like to return the favor in front of the Club America faithful.
This will be just the fourth Champions Cup match between the two legendary sides, with Club America boasting a 2W-1D-0L record, including the 3-0 first leg victory.

But Chivas can turn to the history books for inspiration. In the 2023 Liga MX Clausura semifinals they scored three goals in the Estadio Azteca in a 3-1 win, while the Guadalajara side have won their last two away matches in Champions Cup play, defeating Toronto FC 2-1 in the first leg of the 2018 Final and then their 3-1 win at Forge FC in their Round One First Leg this season.
It will be imperative for GK Oscar Whalley, who has 13 saves in the tournament, and the Chivas defense to keep a clean sheet. Going forward, players like Cade Cowell and Fernando Beltran will need to stand out. Cowell has two goals and an assist, while Beltran led the team in passes (46) in the first leg.
Club America return home to the site of many of their great Champions Cup triumphs and they will attempt to eliminate their rivals to try to add to that legacy. Las Aguilas are playing some of their best football of late and are 5W-0D-2L in their last seven Champions Cup matches, in addition to having won five of their last six match against Chivas in all competitions.
They will be leaning on Henry Martin, Julian Quinones and Diego Valdes to see things out on Wednesday night. Martin scored in the first leg to give him six career Champions Cup goals, Quinones has two goals in the current edition and Valdes scored his fourth career Champions Cup goal last week.
