MEXICO CITY – Club America announced Thursday that it reached an agreement with Ricardo La Volpe for the Argentinean to become head coach, officially replacing Ignacio Ambriz, who was relieved of his duties after a 2-0 loss to Leon on September 17.
The Aguilas won the 2015/16 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League and currently sit sixth in the 2016 Liga MX Apertura, but are winless in five of their last six matches.
La Volpe has managed numerous club sides, as well as the national teams of Mexico and Costa Rica, during a coaching career that has spanned more than 30 years.
"It's a strong challenge for me because, as always, whenever a one assume responsibility in a big team, the risk is greater,” he said. “The team that’s here is not despondent. People are demanding because a large team has to win.”
The 64-year-old’s largest accomplishments included leading Mexico to the 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup title and a place in the Round of 16 at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, where it dropped a 2-1 decision to Argentina after extra time.
In addition to Liga MX play, Club America will battle for the FIFA Club World Cup in December.
