MIAMI, Florida – Adrian Garza scored in the second half to help earn a 1-1 draw for Costa Rican club Herediano against Robinhood of Suriname in the second leg of the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16 on Wednesday night at the Dr. Ir. Franklin Essed Stadion in Paramaribo, Suriname.

With the result, Herediano win the series 3-1 on aggregate and have advanced to the quarterfinals where they will take on Liga MX side Pachuca.

Herediano largely controlled the first half and registered the only shots on target, although there were moments when SV Robinhood showed their teeth in transition, serving as a warning as to what could happen on the counterattack.

In need of two goals, Robinhood came out for the second half looking to mount more pressure on the Herediano back line.

Instead, it was the visiting Costa Ricans who would break the deadlock in the 56’, as Adrian Garza received a pass on the right wing and beat two defenders before rocketing a shot past Robinhood GK Jonathan Fonkel for a 1-0 Herediano lead.

Robinhood certainly had their chance to pull a goal back right before the hour mark when a giveaway led to back-to-back shots in front of the Herediano goal, but on each occasion, there was a block from the Herediano defense to prevent the goal.

Herediano were still just as threatening going forward and they came achingly close to a second in the 68’ when an Andy Rojas shot sliced wide.

Meanwhile, Robinhood’s Don Tuur would get another good look at goal for the hosts in the 78’ off a looping cross but hooked the shot wide.

Tuur would find the back of the net in second half stoppage time, as he turned in a loose ball in front of net to give Robinhood a consolation goal, however the 1-1 final was more than enough to seal Herediano’s passage to the final eight.
