MIAMI, Florida – Honduran club Olimpia’s belief in a comeback will be put to a firm test when they square off against Mexican giants Club America in the second leg of the 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League Round of 16 on Wednesday night at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Mexico.
First half goals from Federico Vinas and Sergio Diaz put Club America in control in the first leg last week in Honduras, but Olimpia would rally late and a goal in the final minutes from Yustin Arboleda provided hope. The Central Americans will now be looking to carry that late-game momentum into Wednesday’s second leg.
While Olimpia’s last contest against a Liga MX opponent ended with a 3-0 defeat to Tigres UANL in the semifinals of 2020 SCCL, that match took place in Orlando, Florida. Prior to that, Olimpia’s previous encounter on Mexico soil was in the group stage of the 2016-17 SCCL when they narrowly fell to Pachuca, 1-0.
If anything, Olimpia proved in last season’s SCCL that they are comfortable playing away, evidenced by their 2-2 draw at the Seattle Sounders in the Round of 16 and the 2-1 win versus the Montreal Impact in the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, as always, seven-time Concacaf champions Club America are very strong at home in SCCL play, with their only defeat at home coming in the 2013-14 edition when they were defeated 1-0 by Alajuelense of Costa Rica,
