MIAMI, Florida – The first legs of the 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League quarterfinals will wrap up on Wednesday night when the Portland Timbers host Club America in what should be wide open affair at Providence Park in Portland, Oregon.
The two sides took divergent paths to reach the final eight of the tournament.
After a 2-2 draw away in their Round of 16 first leg against Marathon of Honduras, the Timbers won in emphatic fashion in the second leg, with a 5-0 victory at home that was powered by Yimmi Chara’s hat trick.
Meanwhile, seven-time Concacaf champions Club America secured their passage to the next phase thanks to the away goal tiebreaker after a hard-fought 2-2 aggregate draw against Honduran side Olimpia.
Nevertheless, Club America are always a threat any time they are in the SCCL knockout rounds and attacking players like Federico Vinas and Sebastian Cordova will be keen to find the back of the net for their side in Portland.
In their third SCCL appearance, the Timbers have reached their first knockout stage and now will look to go a step further. Chara has provided a cutting edge in the final third, while the wizardry of veteran MF Diego Valeri remains a challenge for any opponent.
The series marks the first time that Portland have ever faced a Liga MX opponent in the SCCL, while Club America are 3W-3D-3L all-time against MLS opposition.
