Queretaro, Charlotte FC punch tickets to quarterfinals

MIAMI, Florida – The 2023 Leagues Cup Round of 16 continued on Monday night with both Queretaro and Charlotte FC punching their tickets to the quarterfinals.

Queretaro overcame the New England Revolution 4-3 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. The Liga MX side took a lead through Jaime Gomez, only to see New England equalize through Esmir Bajraktarevic. In spot kicks, Queretaro converted all four attempts taken to advance.

The night’s other contest saw Charlotte FC score two goals in one minute to defeat the Houston Dynamo 2-1 at Shell Energy Stadium in Houston, Texas. Two-time Concacaf Champions Cup winners Toluca travel to Allianz Field in Saint Paul, Minnesota to face Minnesota United. Toluca enjoyed a commanding 4-1 win over Sporting Kansas City, while Minnesota United survived a penalty shootout with Columbus Crew SC.

A very special match awaits at Shell Energy Stadium in Houston, Texas where city rivals Monterrey and Tigres will meet. The five-time Concacaf champions Rayados edged the Portland Timbers 1-0 in the previous round, while 2020 Concacaf champions Tigres defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps in a penalty shootout.

The night will be capped by an all-MLS affair between Los Angeles FC and Real Salt Lake at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles. LAFC rolled past Juarez 7-1, while Real Salt Lake were 3-1 winners versus 2023 Concacaf Champions Cup winners Club Leon.
