SAN JOSE, Costa Rica -- Saprissa announced Monday the signing of midfielder Mariano Torres to a one-year contract with the option for another.
The 29-year-old spent the last six months with The Strongest in Bolivia, where he appeared in 11 league and six Copa Libertadores matches.
"When given the opportunity to come here, I didn’t hesitate, to a team as big as Saprissa,” said Torres, who is known for his ball skills, vision and field management. “I'm amazed by the club, I really like it. Hopefully, things go well and I can help the team.”
Torres climbed through the youth ranks at Boca Juniors, making his professional debut in a 2007 friendly. He then moved to Austria’s LASK Linz in 2008, before returning to South America and playing for numerous clubs, including Huracan (Argentina), Cobresal (Chile) and Wilstermann (Bolivia).
Saprissa will be making its sixth Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League appearance in August, facing off against Group B rivals Dragon and the Portland Timbers.
