Talent-rich Seattle Sounders and Club leon set for Quarterfinals

Published on

MIAMI, Florida – The teams rich with talent will meet in the 2022 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League quarterfinals, beginning on Tuesday night with the Seattle Sounders hosting Club Leon of Mexico in the first leg at Lumen Field in Seattle, Washington.

A five-goal outburst in the second leg powered the Sounders past Honduran side Motagua in the Round of 16 and now Seattle will aim for a similar performance against a Club Leon side that downed Guastatoya of Guatemala, 3-0 on aggregate.

It will be Seattle’s fifth SCCL quarterfinal and they can take comfort that they have won in their last seven SCCL matches played at home, including a 1-0 triumph over 2018 champions Chivas in that edition’s quarterfinal first leg.

The Sounders will require top performances from their biggest playmakers, namely MFs Nicolas Lodeiro and Cristian Roldan, plus FWs Raul Ruidiaz and Jordan Morris.

Lodeiro scored a goal and an assist, while Roldan had a goal and two assists versus Motagua. Morris also found the back of the net, while Ruidiaz will hope for a return to action from an injury.

Club Leon achieved their first ever SCCL series win in the Round of 16 and will be on the hunt for more. Elias Hernandez has been nothing short of fantastic of late for La Fiera, with two goals in the SCCL and his first Liga MX goal of the season over the weekend.

MFs Luis Montes and Santiago Colombatto have each provided assist and GK Rodolfo Cota has been a steady presence in goal with two clean sheets.

These two teams are also familiar with each other, having played in the 2021 Leagues Cup Final in which Club Leon earned a 3-2 win.
