CIUDAD GUATEMALA, Guatemala Juan Anangono’s second half score paved the way for a 2-1 Comunicaciones win over Deportivo Saprissa in the second leg of their 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf League quarterfinal on Wednesday night at the Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores in Guatemala City, Guatemala.

The win for the Guatemalan side eliminates the 2019 SCL champions, with Comunicaciones owning the away goal tiebreaker after their 5-5 tie on aggregate. The Cremas scored three times in the first leg in Costa Rica two weeks ago and will face fellow Guatemalan club Guastatoya in the semifinals.

Comunicaciones raced out to a 1-0 lead in the 14’ when Andres Lezcano connected on a corner kick and redirected a header into net, giving Comunicaciones the advantage in the series.

But back came Saprissa almost immediately and their equalizer also came via a corner kick, with veteran DF Kendall Watson thumping home a header in the 18’ to make it 1-1.

Things remained on a knife’s edge as play continued into the second half, and Comunicaciones would once again take a lead, with Anangono giving his side a 2-1 advantage in the 64’ when he rose to meet a Stheven Robles cross and perfectly placed a header into net.

Saprissa’s pursuit of reaching the final four was very much still alive in the waning minutes, but they could not finish the chances they had, resulting in a first ever SCL semifinal for Comunicaciones.
