MIAMI, Florida – The 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf League will come to a dramatic finale on Tuesday night when Guatemalan club Comunicaciones host Motagua of Honduras in the second leg of the 2021 SCL Final at the Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores in Guatemala City.
The home side will certainly fancy their chances of closing things out after last week’s 2-1 victory in Honduras in the first leg. Goals from Jorge Aparicio and Juan Anangono paved the way, with the latter collecting the assist on Aparicio’s opener.
History is also on the side of the Chapines, who have never lost in seven previous SCL second leg matches (4W-3D). The Cremas have also played superb football in the 2021 SCL at the Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores, compiling a 4W-1D-0L record in this campaign.
While he didn’t score in the first leg, Andres Lezcano is still one of the main attacking threats for the hosts with an 2021 SCL-leading five goals, while both Anangono and Junior Lacayo have three each. Anangono, in particular, has been in excellent form with goals in the last two SCL matches.
Meanwhile, Motagua can look to fellow Honduran side Olimpia for inspiration going into Tuesday’s affair. Olimpia remain the only team in SCL Final history to have lost the first leg and still lifted the trophy when they pulled off that feat in 2017 against Costa Rican side Santos de Guapiles, overturning a 1-0 home loss in the first leg with a 1-0 away win in the second leg and a penalty shootout victory.
Runners-up in 2018 and 2019, Motagua will be determined to not let another title shot slip through their fingers and fans of the Catracho club can expect an aggressive team from the opening whistle in hopes of turning the tables.
They certainly have the playmakers to do it, such as MF Kevin Lopez and MF Matias Galvaliz. Lopez has eight career SCCL goals, including three in 2021, while Galvaliz is the all-time assists leader in SCL history (6).
Roberto Moreira also provides a physical presence up front, evidenced by his strong header which accounted for the lone Motagua goal in the first leg.
Those elements and more should make for a very compelling final second leg.
