MIAMI, Florida – An epic two-goal comeback from Guatemalan side Guastatoya eliminated reigning Scotiabank Concacaf League winners Liga Deportiva Alajuelense of Costa Rica in a 2-2 final in their SCL Round of 16 second leg on Tuesday night at the Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela.
A pair of first half goals had Alajuelense in control going into the final 10 minutes, but Guastatoya turned the tables in dramatic fashion, punctuated by Luis Landin’s winning goal in the 90’, earning a 3-3 draw on aggregate and a place in the semifinals via the away goal tiebreaker.
By virtue of the result, Guastatoya have also qualified for the 2022 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League.
Guastatoya enjoyed a very strong start, beginning with Denilson Sanchez nearly giving the Guatemalan visitors an early lead when his flying volley rang off the post in the 11’.
Alajuelense needed a spark and there was no better man to turn to than all-time SCL leading scorer Johan Venegas, who took a pass from Marcel Hernandez and fired into goal in the 22’ to give the hosts a 1-0 lead with his 14th career SCL goal.

Alajuelense remained in full control in the second half and looked to be cruising to the final whistle, when suddenly Guastatoya turned the series on its head.
It started with an Rafael Da Roza free kick in the 82’ that somehow made its way through a sea of legs and into the back of the net to make it 2-1.
Guastatoya could sense their opportunity for a dramatic comeback and it came to fruition in the 90’ with Landin scoring the decisive goal with a right-footed finish to earn Guastatoya the improbable 2-2 equalizer and a berth in the 2022 SCCL.
