ANTIGUA, Guatemala – When Antigua GFC takes the field against Canada’s Forge FC next Thursday, August 1 in the first leg of the 2019 Scotiabank Concacaf League, it will have a special meaning for Antigua GFC MF Marco Dominguez.
Born in Montreal, Canada, Dominguez will get a chance to play in his birth country when the two sides meet in Hamilton, Ontario, and it is evident that Dominguez will be motivated to show his skills to those not just in Canada but all around the Concacaf region.
“It is an important game for me personally, it’s a chance to do well and play two important games. You never what could happen or who might be watching. It can open doors to a bigger club so I want to be sure I am playing at my best,” said Dominguez in an exclusive interview with Concacaf.com.
The son of a Guatemalan father and a Dominican mother, Dominguez and his Antigua GFC teammates want to demonstrate in the SCL what Guatemalan football has to offer.
“We want to show what Guatemalan clubs can do. We have players with experience. The football here in Guatemala is different, it is a rough but dynamic football. We know that Forge is quick and have players who can make the difference in matches, but we’ll be ready,” Said the former Canadian player in the 2013 Concacaf U17 Championship held in Panama and in the FIFA World Cup in Saudi Arabia of the same year.
The tie marks just the second time that Antigua GFC has appeared in Concacaf competition. The club’s previous appearance came in the 2016-17 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League, and there are still some players from that squad in this year’s team, which should help the Chapin outfit in the two legs against the Canadians.
“It’s the first Concacaf competition for many of the guys but we do have some guys who were in the Champions League before. We are really happy to be in this tournament and we want to go forward, we want the chance to play against teams from MLS and the biggest clubs in the region,” concluded Dominguez.
