MIAMI – Canada and Uruguay square off in the 2024 CONMEBOL Copa America third place match on Saturday at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The two nations will meet for the third time in their history. Uruguay won the first meeting 3-1 on February 2, 1986 in the Miami Cup with goals from Carlos Aguilera, Santiago Ostolaza, and Jose Luis Zalazar. The Canadian goal was scored by George Pakos.

Uruguay won 2-0 with goals from Nicolas de la Cruz and Darwin Nuñez on September 27, 2022 at the Tehelme Pole Stadium in Bratislava, Slovakia. Fourteen players who participated for either team in that friendly are among the current rosters for the 2024 Copa America.

Alphonso Davies vs Federico Valverde

Uruguay's Federico Valverde chases the ball against Canada's Alphonso Davies in an international friendly ahead of the Qatar World Cup on September 27, 2022, at Tehelne Pole Stadium in Bratislava, Slovakia.

For Canada, Alphonso Davies, Stephen Eustaquio, Jonathan David, and Cyle Larin were starters, while Ismael Kone and Tajon Buchanan came on as substitutes.

Jonathan David and Jacob Shaffelburg lead Canada with a goal each in the current edition. Shaffelburg also assisted David's match-winning goal in the group stage against Peru.

Maxime Crepeau posted two clean sheets in the group stage. The Canada goalkeeper has accumulated 18 saves through five appearances.

Canada is focused on closing its debut campaign with a top three finish. Mexico and Honduras are the only Concacaf teams to have achieved this feat in the 1993 and 2001 editions, respectively.

Head-To-Head Canada vs. Uruguay

They will meet for the third time in their history, with Uruguay having won both previous matches.

On February 2, 1986, in the Miami Cup, Uruguay defeated Canada 3-1 at the now-demolished Orange Bowl with goals from Carlos Aguilera, Santiago Ostolaza, and José Luis Zalazar. The Canadian goal was scored by George Pakos.

The last time was in an international friendly on September 27, 2022, at the Tehelme Pole Stadium in Bratislava, with Uruguay winning 2-0 with goals from Nicolás de la Cruz and Darwin Núñez. Both are part of the current squad in the present edition of the Copa America. Eight players from Uruguay who were in that last friendly are in the 2024 Copa America.

From the Canadian players who were in that match and are part of the 2024 CONMEBOL Copa America roster, there are: Alphonso Davies, Stephen Eustáquio, Jonathan David, and Cyle Larin, who were starters, and Ismael Koné, who came on as a substitute, as well as the injured Tajon Buchanan.

Fact: Uruguay will play the third-place match in the Copa América for the fourth time, having won one and lost two. In 2001, they lost on penalties against Honduras; in 2004, they defeated Peru; and in 2007, they lost to Mexico.
