Costa Rica ends Copa America with win over Paraguay

AUSTIN, Texas — Costa Rica earned a 2-1 win against Paraguay in the final matchday of Group D at the 2024 CONMEBOL Copa America on Tuesday at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas.

Francisco Calvo struck in the box with a header in the 3' to put Costa Rica in the lead. Joseph Mora delivered the assist with a pinpoint cross from the left side.

Josimar Alcocer added a second for Costa Rica in the 7' with a right-footed strike from outside the box.

Ramon Sosa scored for Paraguay in the 55' to bring the South Americans within one.

Calvo stopped an attempt from Angel Romero in the 60’ as Paraguay worked for the tying goal.

Patrick Sequeira made consecutive stops in the 64’ to deny attempts from Fabián Balbuena and Julio Enciso.

Alvaro Zamora denied Angel Romero in the 84’ to maintain Costa Rica in the lead.

Sequeira made a pivotal stop in the 90’+4 to keep the tying score from crossing his goal line. The Costa Rican goalkeeper finished the night with six saves and 11 in three matches.

Los Ticos exited the 2024 edition with a victory and a 1-1-1 record. Costa Rica finished third in Group D as it bowed out of its sixth appearance in the tournament.
