MIAMI – The 2024 CONMEBOL Copa America continues with the first all-Concacaf matchup of the tournament when Mexico meets Jamaica on Saturday at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.

The Mexico men’s national team will make its 11th appearance at the Copa America as it steps on the field for its 49th match in the tournament, the most from any Concacaf nation. Mexico’s best finishes have been as runners-up in 1993 and 2001, and it has reached the semifinals five times.

The reigning Concacaf Gold Cup champions will look to win a second continental trophy in consecutive years under head coach Jaime Lozano. Lozano played for Mexico in 2004 and 2007, helping the team to a third-place finish in the latter.

Santiago Gimenez, the author of Mexico’s winning goal in the 2023 Gold Cup Final, will be one of the target men for goals. Edson Alvarez will wear the captain’s armband as a man of experience with two Gold Cup titles and a multiple-time Concacaf Best XI selection.

Recent Concacaf Champions Cup winners with Pachuca, Erick Sanchez, and Bryan Gonzalez will also be part of Mexico’s squad. Lozano has also called up 2023 Gold Cup Best XI selections Johan Vasquez, Jorge Sanchez, Luis Chavez, and Orbelin Pineda.

Jamaica will play in its third Copa America and be the only Caribbean nation in the 2024 edition. Like Mexico, the Reggae Boyz qualified for the tournament by reaching the 2023-24 Concacaf Nations League Finals.

Head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson has led Jamaica to their first Nations League Finals and a two-match winning streak in World Cup Qualifying. The Icelandic manager looks to break new ground by leading Jamaica to its first goal, first win, and first knockout stage appearance in the Copa America.

Hallgrimsson has called up a formidable squad with names like Fulham’s Bobby Decordova-Reid, West Ham’s Michail Antonio, and Clermont striker Shamar Nicholson. Gold Cup Best XI Demarai Gray is another top player who will occupy the attention of the Mexican defense.

Michael Hector could set a new mark by becoming the first Jamaican player to participate in his seventh Copa America encounter. Hector shares Jamaica’s all-time record with Westley Morgan, Garath McCleary, Jobi McAnuff, and Giles Barnes at six matches.

Mexico is undefeated in all but one of 11 official encounters at Houston’s NRG Stadium. Mexico and Jamaica last met on the same ground in 2005, a 1-nil Mexico victory during the 2005 Gold Cup group stage.

In their last 5 meetings in all competitions, Mexico is undefeated with 3 wins and 2 draws. The "reggae boyz" have only managed to win 2 of their last 12 matches, with a record of 2 Jamaican wins, 4 draws, and 6 Mexican wins.
