Panama meets Bolivia with eyes on first quarterfinals appearance

MIAMI – Panama meets Bolivia in Group C at the 2024 CONMEBOL Copa America on Monday at INTER&Co Stadium in Orlando, Florida.

Los Canaleros are coming off collecting their first three points of the campaign thanks to a 2-1 win over the United States. Cesar Blackman and Jose Fajardo scored in the Panama victory.

Adalberto Carrasquilla was sent off in the 88’ of the U.S. encounter. The reigning Concacaf Gold Cup Golden Ball winner will miss the upcoming match with Bolivia serving his suspension.

Panama began the group stage with a 3-1 defeat to Uruguay. Michael Murillo scored the lone goal in a valiant effort, separated by the minimal difference for most of the encounter.

A Panama victory combined with a U.S. draw or loss would send the Central Americans to the knockout round. If both Panama and the United States win, the Concacaf nation with the higher goal difference will move on.

If Panama advances to the quarterfinals, it will do so for the first time in its history. Panama had only participated once in the Copa America, when it debuted in the 2016 edition and was unable to advance from the group stage.

Bolivia is searching for its first win of the campaign and still has hopes of moving on to the next round. After opening its campaign with a 2-nil loss to the United States, La Verde fell 5-nil to Uruguay in its second match.

The South Americans would need a victory combined with a United States loss and score enough goals to win the tiebreaker over the U.S. and Panama.

HEAD TO HEAD

They met in the Group Stage of the Copa América 2016, a 2x1 victory for Panama with goals by Blas Pérez (11’, 87’) and for Bolivia, Juan Carlos Arce (54’).
