USA begins Copa America quest against Bolivia

Published on

MIAMI – The 2024 CONMEBOL Copa America continues with the host United States facing Bolivia to open Group C on Sunday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The United States men’s national team will make its fifth appearance and second as the tournament hosts. In 2016, the nation’s previous participation, the U.S. matched its best-ever finish of reaching the semifinals.

Head coach Gregg Berhalter was a player on the 1995 squad, the other team to reach the semifinals in the program’s history. Berhalter will look to lead the U.S. to a fourth trophy after wins in the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup and 2019-20 and 2023-24 editions of the Concacaf Nations League.

Wearing the captain’s armband for the U.S. will be A.C. Milan winger Christian Pulisic, a two-time Concacaf Best XI selection, Gold Cup Best XI selection, three-time Concacaf Nations League Finals Best XI and a former winner of the Concacaf Gold Cup Best Young Player Award.

Berhalter also has 18 of the 26 players from the 2022 FIFA World Cup roster, including Tim Ream, Antonee Robinson, Weston McKennie, Timothy Weah, and Yunus Musah. This is the second-youngest squad the USA will field at a Copa America, the first being the 2007 team.

Bolivia will play in its 29th tournament and its 21st consecutive appearance. Its best finishes came as champions in 1963 and runners-up in 1997, both as the hosts.

La Verde is managed by Brazilian head coach Antonio Carlos Zago, a former Copa America champion as a player in the 1999 edition.

Zago led Bolivian club Bolivar to the Apertura 2022 title with the likes of captain Luis Haquin, Jose Sagredo, Roberto Fernandez, Leonel Justiniano, and Bruno Miranda, all part of the current squad for Copa America.

The United States and Bolivia will meet for the ninth time and second at the Copa America. The most recent meeting was a 3-nil U.S. win in 2018, with goals from Walker Zimmerman, Tim Weah, and Josh Sargent.

United States vs Bolivia

They first faced each other in the Copa América in the 1995 edition in Uruguay, in Group C, with a 1x0 victory for Bolivia with a goal by Marco Etcheverry.
