USA faces Uruguay with quarterfinal hopes on the line

MIAMI – The United States faces Uruguay in Group C at the 2024 CONMEBOL Copa America on Monday at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.

The U.S. started its campaign with a 2-nil win against Bolivia. Christian Pulisic and Folarin Balogun scored the goals, while Matt Turner kept a clean sheet.

In a Concacaf matchup, the Stars and Stripes fell 2-1 to Panama in their second group-stage match. Folarin Balogun scored the opening goal, but the U.S. played with ten men for most of the encounter after a red card was issued to Timothy Weah in the first half.

Matt Turner exited at halftime of the Panama encounter due to injury. Ethan Horvath entered the game and could pick up his first start in the 2024 edition.

The United States will look to advance to the knockout round for the third time. The U.S. needs a victory, or a draw combined with a Panama loss or draw.

Uruguay leads Group C with six points and is in pole position to advance as the group winner. A defeat would still secure first place for the South Americans, if they maintain a higher goal difference.

Facundo Pellistri, Darwin Nuñez, Maximiliano Araujo, Federico Valverde, and Rodrigo Bentancur scored in the 5-nil win over Bolivia. Goalkeeper Sergio Rochet picked up his first cleansheet of the campaign.

Araujo, Nuñez and Matias Viña scored in the 3-1 win over Panama in the nation’s first match. Araujo and Nuñez lead the team with two goals apiece.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

They will face each other for the second time in the Copa America, with the first being in 1993 in the group stage on June 16, 1993, where Uruguay won 1-0 with a goal by Santiago Ostolaza (51’).
