Sporting San Miguelito show home strength against Malacateco

MIAMI, Florida – Panamanian side Sporting San Miguelito is through to the Round of 16 of the 2022 Scotiabank Concacaf League after a strong home performance in a 3-0 victory against Malacateco of Guatemala in the second leg of their Preliminary Round series on Wednesday night at the Estadio Rommel Fernandez in Panama City, Panama.

The result earned Sporting San Miguelito a 4-1 win on aggregate and a place in the next round against fellow Panamanian club Tauro.

The home side wanted to make sure that Malacateco would not build any momentum and it was a 1-0 to Sporting San Miguelito in the 14’ when veteran defender Adolfo Machado got on the end of a free kick and whipped a header into net past Malacateco GK Ruben Silva.

The Panamanian hosts did not let up and soon enough the advantage was doubled to 2-0 in the 30’ with Kevin Galvan getting on the end of a ball after a mad scramble right on the goalline.

Sporting San Miguelito kept the pressure on and looked certain to score their third of the night in the 58’ when Dwann Oliveira was in on goal, but a fine save from Silva kept it a two-goal affair.

Oliveira would get a second crack at it though, just minutes later in the 70’ with the Brazilian firing in at the near post to make it 3-0.

From there, Sporting San Miguelito closed things out with no issues to secure the clean sheet victory and cement their spot in the Round of 16.
