MIAMI – U.S. women’s national team legend Alex Morgan played in her final professional league match as the four-time Concacaf Player of the Year hung up her boots.
Morgan exited the match in the 13th minute, as San Diego Wave FC hosted North Carolina Courage in NWSL action in front of 26,516 fans on Sunday at the Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego. The Wave fell 1-4 in league play, but Morgan’s finale was the story of the match.
The only goal from the hosts came in the 13th minute, with Morgan delivering her final corner kick, as Kennedy Wesley equalized to answer Haley Hopkins’ goal in the 4’. The Courage scored three unanswered from Feli Rauch in the 21’, Bianca St-Georges in the 45’, and Meredith Speck in the 90’+4.
San Diego Wave occupies the 12th spot in the NWSL standings and will seek to improve when they travel to face Utah Royals on Saturday. Wave FC will resume its participation in the Concacaf W Champions Cup when they host Portland Thorns FC next Wednesday.
NJ/NY Gotham FC won 2-1 against the Houston Dash to sit fourth in the league standings. After meeting Seattle Reign on Monday, Gotham FC will host CF Monterrey Femenil in the Women’s Champions Cup.
