MIAMI - The professional women’s football leagues across Concacaf keep breaking attendance records, showing how fans are on the edge of their seats from the start until a team is crowned champion.
Over the past week, people saw how the best four teams of the Liga MX Femenil reached the Semifinals, but only two passed the test to earn a spot in the big final of the Apertura 2022.
The first team who clinched a spot to play the most important match of the season was Club America, who defeated Guadalajara 6-4 on aggregate. Las Aguilas showed determination in the first game at the Estadio Azteca on Saturday evening, with Nicolette Hernandez, Scarlett Camberos and Betzy Cuevas being the goal scorers of the night in a 3-1 win. Chivas managed to get one goal back from the boots of Diana Rodriguez.
Everything was settled at the Estadio Akron on Monday evening, where the hosts managed to score three goals thanks to captain Alicia Cervantes, Gabriela Valenzuela and Adriana Iturbide. However, Andrea Pereira, Alison Gonzalez and Kiana Palacios also scored, helping Las Aguilas to keep their quest for their second championship alive with a 3-3 draw.
The second Semifinal on Saturday saw the Clasico Regio take place at the Estadio Universitario. Tigres made the most of their home advantage, with 36,509 fans cheering for the Amazonas, as Stephany Mayor scored two goals. But Monterrey was not done, and in the 69’ captain Rebeca Bernal pulled one goal back for her team, making for a 2-1 final, leaving everything wide open.
In the second leg at the Estadio BBVA, the Rayadas demonstrated why they reached that stage, Bernal again being present and scoring the first goal of the night, followed by Maria Salas. However, four-time champions Tigres put up a fight, with Golden Boot winner Mia Fishel and MVP of the night Lizbeth Ovalle finding the back of the net for a 2-2 draw, giving Tigres the 4-3 aggregate win to earn a spot in the Final and a chance to rewrite history again by lifting their fifth trophy.
