Borgella brace paces Haiti past Senegal and closer to WWC

Roselord Borgella scored a pair of goals to help power Haiti to a commanding 4-0 win over Senegal.

MIAMI, Florida – Roselord Borgella scored a pair of goals to help power Haiti to a commanding 4-0 win over Senegal in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup Playoff Semifinals on Saturday at the North Harbour Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand.

With the victory, Haiti advance to the Group B Playoff Final versus Chile on Wednesday, where the winner will punch their ticket to this summer’s Women’s World Cup in Australia/New Zealand.

The first big chance of the match came in the 36’ and it was Haiti nearly scoring, as Nerilia Mondesir rounded the Senegal GK and played back to Sherly Jeudy, whose effort deflected wide.

Haiti kept plugging away and they were rewarded for their hard work with a goal right before halftime. Jeudy swung in a corner kick and Kethna Louis was there to meet it, snapping in a header for a 1-0 Haiti lead in the 45’.

Haiti were keen to avoid any kind of drama in the second half and they were able to tack on a second goal in the 55’ when a curling ball into the area from Melchie Dumornay found the feet of Nerilia Mondesir, who calmly finished into net for a 2-0 lead.

There was almost a third for Haiti in the 63’ on a Borgella shot that rang off the crossbar, but a minute later in the 64’ Borgella was on target when she muscled off a defender and fired into goal for the 3-0 advantage.

Borgella was just getting started and two minutes later she scored her second of the night to extend the Haiti lead to 4-0 with another powerful move against a Senegal defender and a clinical finish.

From there the Haitian defense took over, seeing things out to secure the clean sheet victory and a chance for a first ever Women’s World Cup berth on Wednesday.
