Canada on verge of Paris 2024 and W Gold Cup vs. Jamaica

Canada won the first leg over Jamaica 2-0 for the first time in Kingston, Jamaica, leading the series.

Toronto, Canada – The second and final leg of the Concacaf Olympic Playoff for Paris 2024 and direct qualification to the 2024 W Gold Cup between Canada and Jamaica will take place on Tuesday at BMO Field in Toronto, Canada.

Last Friday, Canada won the first leg over Jamaica 2-0 for the first time in Kingston, Jamaica, leading the series and going into the last match with the advantage to get the ticket they need to defend their Olympic title.

FW Nichelle Prince, who returned from injury, and FW Adriana Leon, who celebrated her 100th cap, were the authors of the two goals that gave Canada the important lead for their next match.

GK Kailen Sheridan was also a key player in Kingston, keeping a clean sheet and being there to stop any chances for the Reggae Girlz. This result meant the 10th win for Canada over Jamaica, the first one in the Caribbean since 1991.

Jamaica played an Olympic Playoff and direct qualification match for the first time at home, feeling the crowd support the entire time. The Reggae Girlz created opportunities to equalize the game, but had no luck finding the back of the net.

Captain Khadija Shaw led her team with many chances, as they showed the home crowd the game they have developed over the years.

As she has been showing since the 2022 Concacaf W Championship, GK Rebecca Spencer was always ready and present to defend her area, stopping almost everything that came her way, giving her team the security they needed to go the rest of the game.

Both teams have a lot to fight for in this last match. Besides getting the last ticket to go to Paris 2024, Canada to defend their title and Jamaica to become the first Caribbean Nation to participate in women’s football at the Olympic Games, the winner of this last leg will also qualify for the first W Gold Cup to be played also next year.
