Miami, FL (Wednesday, April 26, 2023) - The Concacaf Council today discussed and agreed in principle to launch a new Concacaf women’s club competition in 2024.
This is in line with FIFA’s work to develop a FIFA Women’s Club World Cup, which was announced by the global governing body in December 2022.
The new Concacaf women’s club competition follows an entire revamp of Concacaf’s women’s national team calendar for 2021-2024, which includes more than double the number of official matches across the region compared with the previous cycle of competitions. Concacaf’s new women’s national team competitions include the Concacaf W Qualifiers and W Championship, and the upcoming Road to W Gold Cup and the inaugural Concacaf W Gold Cup which is scheduled for February and March 2024.
The format and further details of Concacaf’s new women’s club competition will be determined and communicated later this year, once the Confederation has received further information regarding the format and slot allocation for the new FIFA Women’s Club World Cup, and has held further discussions with stakeholders.
The new Concacaf women’s club competition will include clubs from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean and will be the sole qualification route for Concacaf clubs to the FIFA Women’s Club World Cup.
Concacaf President and FIFA Vice President, Victor Montagliani, said: “The ongoing growth and development of women’s football is a major priority for Concacaf. Since we launched our Concacaf W strategy in 2019, we have enhanced our women’s national team calendar and delivered tremendous competitions which are driving development across the region. The next phase of our strategy is to focus on a women’s club platform and, while there remains work to be done on the detail, this is a very important step towards the launch of an exciting new competition next year.”
